I drew Max Shreck in my drawing block today.

Tue Nov 11, 2008, 7:29 AM
What would be a fun thing to do for the next 10 weeks in art class? The thing is, if I have something I want to draw, well, I'm usually drawing it at home anyway, so art class is not terribly productive for me anyway.

Also they didn't have any etching equipment! I was very disappointed. ):

IF YOU HAVE ANY REQUESTS, SUGGEST AWAY I guess is what I'm saying. No, but seriously, tell me what you'd like to see me do. Because you know I live to make people happy. I'm a little beam of sunny sunshine that way. And like, general thoughts on my art, the suckness or the not suckness, I promise I won't cry or throw up on you.

I request to see said Max Shreck drawing :P

Well, it was terrible, about an inch high, and overlapped by a portrait of my friend and nun boobs. I'll draw you some more ugly vampires in a similar style, though! I seem to have developed a fondness for them.

Disclaimer: I'm really lazy so if I say I'll do something I probably won't but I might eventually!

I know what you mean about art class. That's the main reason I could never study art past college. I could never get the same inspiration or challenge and often, it was so restrictive it was mind numbing. My advice is to use class time to develop a technique you are not currently proficient in, as that way you will not only learn the technique, but, have to do it under watch of deadlines. ^^;

Also on general thoughts about your art.
Well, I couldn't define a reason of whether it is 'good' or not, personally because I think art is measured by technical ability and concept, not by a measurable scale to best.
At the moment you have struck a nice balance between technical ability and concept, nicer still are the pieces where you combine both.
Which is rare, I haven't seen it too often and dare say I won't see it for a while more.
Current strengths I can see are use of composition, there's never a lot of negative space to make the focal point feel too static or light or too unimportant in the piece.
Current points for improvement I can see, well, I would say confidence. As some pieces have a really beautiful level of concept, but, it almost seems like some times you can't put into words (so to speak) the idea.
You have a strong level of experimentation I've seen, going from piece to piece with different ideas and constantly improving in certain areas. Use of colour and space is often good, composition is strong, technical ability is nice and it's still 'evolving'. You can almost see a great deal of promise as to what your style will develop into in time.
Overall you just have to keep your self-confidence up and you'll develop into an interesting and rare style, something unique, seldom seen in the modern art world.

(Oh and I know you probably don't know me, I just figured seen as I was passing I'd leave a comment here. :))

Coffee? Pencils? Music on my Zen? You know what this means?- Art! (And one happy Moggie. xD)

Thanks for the detailed comment! And don't worry about whether I know you or not, everyone is a stranger at some point, right? ;D

I, uh, I skip school a lot. I'd wanted to do etching in class, but that wasn't possible. Thanks for the advice, though. I almost never use traditional media, so I suppose it's an opportunity.

If you don't mind, could you explain what you mean by the "confidence/putting into words" part? Nonetheless, it's very helpful, so thanks again. :>
:iconnessie1001:
Oh oh oh! And what pictures would you say are a combination of skill + concept?
:iconetherealmog:
(Sorry about the 3 day wait for a reply.)
Hahah, I never really thought about it like that. But yes, even the best friends I have I used to be a stranger to at some time. Astute observation. :)

I have been known to not turn up as well. S'okay. Just as long as the work gets done.
You're welcome, I recommend you try some traditional media studies. They are quite difficult to get the hang of at first, but it becomes really rewarding after time, to think that between you and a piece of graphite you created a work of art.

And I don't mind at all. I tend to get confusing. ^^;
Well to put something into words would be to best describe it as you see it. Often those who can't/don't put something into words have an idea but have a difficult time explaining/conveying that to the person they are expressing it to.
Along the same lines, sometimes I feel that your work has this great air of potential and scope but you haven't really expressed it fully, like the idea feels as if it could be even more advanced, almost unfinished.
But only some of the time, most of the time the concept is well explained and expressed. ^_^

Hmm. Well, I'd say:
[link] As this has a rather pleasant mixture of shading alongside style, with an interesting concept and a strong impression overall.
[link] The concept itself is striking and bold, the application of an almost anonymous sketchy inking style makes it even more effective.
[link] This has a fresh and interesting style, yet conceptually, it has a lovely balanced colour element and delicious smoothness.
[link] The sheer detail in this reflects a level of your skill (and a good eye), though the concept compliments it well. Overall it's nicely balanced between the two.

And these are the only four I can remember for now. I did have more but it's been a while since I looked over them... ^^;

Okay, I think I understand.

Thanks for the critique, and don't worry about the wait. It's funny how the pictures other people say they like best are almost never the ones I like the most myself. ;D
